Why do businesses use more than one payment gateway?
Most businesses add a second payment gateway after a bad day: an outage in the middle of a sale, a sudden dip in UPI success, or a settlement hold during a risk review. Running multiple payment gateways removes that single point of failure and lets you use whichever gateway works best for each payment method.
- Downtime happens to everyone. Gateways, banks and UPI apps all have maintenance windows and unplanned outages. With one PG, its downtime is your downtime.
- Success rates differ. One gateway can be strong on UPI and average on cards from a certain bank. At volume, that gap is real money.
- Pricing conversations get easier. When you can move volume between gateways, you negotiate from a better position.
- More payment methods. International cards, EMI and pay later options are not equally supported everywhere.
- Less risk from account holds. If one gateway pauses your account, payments keep flowing through the other.
How does JustPe Multi PG work?
Here is what happens from the moment your customer taps Pay:
- Create the payment through one API. Your website or app creates the order through a single JustPe API call. The call looks the same whichever gateway ends up processing the payment.
- Pick the gateway. JustPe checks your routing rules, such as payment method and amount, and the health of each connected gateway, then picks one.
- Customer pays as usual. The customer completes the payment on the familiar UPI app, card OTP or net banking screen of the chosen gateway.
- Fall back if needed. If the primary gateway is down or returns a clear technical error, the next attempt can go to your backup gateway.
- Receive one set of callbacks. Each gateway's callback reaches JustPe, is logged, and is forwarded to your server, so order status updates from one place.

Single payment gateway vs multi PG: what is the difference?
| Factor | Single payment gateway | JustPe Multi PG |
|---|---|---|
| Integration | One integration with one gateway | One integration with JustPe, several gateways behind it |
| When a gateway is down | Payments fail until it recovers | Traffic can move to a backup gateway |
| Success rate | Limited to one gateway's performance | Each payment can go to the better performing gateway |
| Payment methods | Whatever that gateway supports | Everything your connected gateways support |
| Callbacks and status | One gateway's webhooks | All gateways' webhooks logged in one place |
| Best for | Early stage, low volume | Growing businesses, sales peaks, high volume |
Multi PG is not free of trade-offs. You will have more than one merchant agreement, more than one settlement cycle and a bit more KYC paperwork at the start. Our single vs multiple payment gateways comparison covers the costs honestly.
Is multi PG the same as payment orchestration?
Mostly, yes. Payment orchestration is the broader industry term for a layer that sits in front of several payment gateways, routes each payment and gives you one integration. Indian merchants more often call the same thing a multi PG or multi-gateway payment platform. Some vendors add AI or machine learning to the routing decision; read what AI payment routing actually does before paying extra for it. To see how the main platforms in India differ, including SprintPGX, Razorpay Optimizer and Nimbbl, see our comparison of multi PG platforms.
Does your business actually need multiple payment gateways?
Not always. If you take a few hundred online payments a month and rarely see failures, one good gateway is usually enough. A multi PG setup starts paying off when failed payments cost you real money, when you run time-bound sales, or when a gateway outage has already hurt your revenue.
A quick test: take last month's failed payments, remove the ones that failed for customer reasons like low balance or a wrong UPI PIN, and multiply the rest by your average order value. If that number makes you wince, it is time. Not sure what counts as a customer-side failure? See why online payments fail and how to fix them.
How to choose a multi PG provider in India
- Gateway support. Make sure the gateways you already use can be connected, so you are not forced to migrate.
- Routing control. Can you route by payment method and amount, and change the rules yourself? See the payment routing rules worth asking about.
- Failover. Is it automatic or manual, and how quickly does traffic move? More on how a backup payment gateway works.
- Webhooks and reconciliation. Look for one view of transactions and callbacks across every gateway.
- Regulatory standing. Non-bank payment aggregators in India need RBI authorisation. Check that the gateways you connect appear on RBI's list or have a valid application. Our payment aggregator vs payment gateway guide explains the rules.
- Saved cards. RBI's card-on-file tokenisation rules have applied since October 2022. Ask how saved card tokens behave when a payment is routed to a different gateway.
- Support during peaks. You want a named contact on the day of your biggest sale, not a ticket queue.
Multi PG payment gateway FAQs
What is a multi PG payment gateway?
A multi PG payment gateway lets a business accept online payments through two or more payment gateways (PGs) using a single integration. A routing layer decides which gateway handles each payment, so the business is not dependent on one provider.
Why should my business use multiple payment gateways?
Multiple payment gateways give you a backup when one gateway has downtime, let you send each payment to the gateway that performs best for that method, such as UPI, cards or net banking, and give you more room to negotiate pricing.
How does payment routing work in JustPe Multi PG?
You set routing rules, such as a primary and backup gateway for each payment method. JustPe sends each transaction to the right payment gateway and can switch to the backup gateway if the primary one is unavailable.
Do I need a separate integration for each payment gateway?
No. You integrate with JustPe once and connect multiple payment gateways behind that single integration, including their payment callbacks and webhooks.
Which payment methods can I accept?
You can accept UPI, UPI QR, debit cards, credit cards, net banking and wallets, depending on the payment gateways connected to your account.
How do I get started with JustPe Multi PG?
Contact the JustPe team through the contact page or email support@justpe.in. We will understand your payment volumes and gateways and help you go live.
Is a multi PG the same as a payment aggregator?
No. A payment aggregator collects money from customers and settles it to merchants, and in India a non-bank aggregator needs RBI authorisation. A multi PG layer sits on top of one or more gateways or aggregators and decides where each payment goes. The money still moves through those regulated providers.
Will my customers notice anything different at checkout?
Usually not. They still pay through the UPI apps, card OTP pages and net banking screens they already know. The choice of gateway happens in the background.
