Why one payment gateway is a single point of failure

Every payment gateway has downtime: planned maintenance, an incident at a partner bank, or a spike in load on a big sale day. When you have one gateway, there is nothing to switch to. Your checkout stays open, customers try to pay, and every attempt fails until the gateway recovers.

The cost is not only the orders lost during the outage. Some customers who see a failed payment do not come back, and others contact support asking where their money went.

How does payment gateway failover work?

  1. Your primary gateway handles payments as usual.
  2. The system watches health signals: error responses, timeouts and the success rate over the last few minutes.
  3. When those signals cross a limit you set, new payments are sent to the backup gateway.
  4. Payments already in progress on the primary are left alone and tracked to their final status, so nobody is charged twice.
  5. When the primary recovers, traffic moves back.

What to set up before you need a backup gateway

  • A live, tested second gateway. A backup that has never processed a real payment is not a backup. Send a small share of traffic through it regularly.
  • Both gateways enabled for the same methods. If your backup does not support the UPI flow or card types your customers use, failover will not help them.
  • Callbacks from both gateways. Your order system must understand success and failure callbacks from either gateway.
  • Refund handling per gateway. Store which gateway processed each order.
  • Clear rules for subscriptions. Recurring mandates and saved card tokens are usually tied to one gateway, so plan what happens to renewals during an outage.

Failover is one of several payment routing rules you can set, and usually the first one worth setting up.

Which businesses need a backup payment gateway most?

  • Online stores that run time-bound sales or festive offers.
  • Ticketing, travel and event businesses where demand comes in bursts.
  • Subscription and education businesses with fixed fee deadlines.
  • Any business where an hour of failed payments is a noticeable loss.

How JustPe sets up your backup gateway

Keep the gateway you use today as primary. Connect a second gateway behind your single JustPe integration and choose it as backup for each payment method. Callbacks from both gateways are logged in one place and forwarded to your system, so your orders stay accurate whichever gateway took the payment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a backup payment gateway?

A backup payment gateway is a second payment gateway kept live and ready, so that when your main gateway is down, slow or failing, new payments go through the backup instead. Customers can keep paying, and you keep taking orders during the outage.

Is payment gateway failover automatic?

It can be either. Manual failover means someone on your team switches gateways when they notice a problem. Automatic failover watches errors, timeouts and success rates and moves traffic on its own. Automatic is faster, which matters most during sales.

Do I need a separate merchant account for the backup gateway?

Yes. You complete KYC and sign an agreement with the second gateway, and it settles the payments it processes to your bank account. A multi PG layer like JustPe means you do not need a second checkout integration.

What happens to refunds if a payment went through the backup gateway?

The refund goes back through the gateway that processed that payment. That is why your system should record which gateway handled each order. JustPe keeps this with each transaction's callback.
