Is this happening to your business?

  • Customers message you saying money was debited but the order shows failed.
  • Your UPI success rate drops at certain hours or on sale days.
  • Your gateway had an outage and you could do nothing except wait.
  • You see carts with a payment attempt but no order, and the customer never comes back.
  • Your support team spends hours matching payments to orders.

If two or more of these sound familiar, you are paying for failed payments every month. The good news is that a large part of it can be fixed without changing your products, pricing or checkout design.

Which payment failures can you actually fix?

Not all failures are equal. Before spending money on a fix, sort your failures into these three groups. Our guide on why online payments fail goes into each reason in detail.

Type of failureExamplesCan a multi PG setup help?
Technical (gateway or bank side)Gateway down, timeouts, errors, one gateway weak on UPI or a bankYes. This is what a backup gateway and routing are for
Bank declinesLow balance, wrong UPI PIN, card not enabled for online use, limitsPartly. Clear messages and offering another method help more
Customer drop-offsOTP late, UPI request expired, customer distractedPartly. A faster, more reliable gateway path reduces waiting

How much are failed payments costing you?

Enter your own numbers from your gateway dashboard. The defaults are only an example.

Failed payments per month: 1,000 · of which gateway-side: 300

Order value at risk from gateway-side failures: ₹2,40,000 per month (₹28,80,000 a year)

Not every one of these orders can be won back, because some customers retry on their own. But this is the pool a backup gateway and routing work on. Share these numbers with our team.

How JustPe Multi PG reduces failed payments

1. A backup gateway that takes over when your main one struggles

Your current gateway stays your primary. A second gateway is connected as backup, and when the primary is down or erroring, payments move to the backup. Read more about how a backup payment gateway works.

2. Routing rules per payment method

If one gateway is better on UPI and another on cards, you can send each payment method to the gateway that handles it best. See the payment routing rules you can set.

3. Every payment callback in one place

Late success callbacks are the main reason behind "money debited but order failed". JustPe receives and logs callbacks from every connected gateway and forwards them to your system, so an order that succeeded late can still be marked paid instead of being lost.

4. One integration

Your developers integrate with JustPe once. Adding or changing a gateway later does not mean rebuilding your checkout.

What to do this week, even before talking to us

  1. Export last month's failed payments from your gateway dashboard.
  2. Tag each one as technical, bank decline or drop-off using the failure reason.
  3. Check the success rate for UPI, cards and net banking separately, by hour of day.
  4. Make sure you mark an order as failed only after checking the final payment status, not on a timeout.
  5. Put the numbers into the calculator above.

If technical failures are a big slice, a second gateway will help. If you would like us to look at the numbers with you, get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Why are so many of my customers' payments failing?

Most businesses see a mix of three causes: technical failures at the gateway or bank, bank declines such as low balance or a wrong UPI PIN, and customers dropping off at the OTP or UPI app step. Break your failures down by these three before choosing a fix, because each one needs a different solution.

Will a multi PG setup fix all my failed payments?

No. A multi PG setup with a backup gateway and routing targets technical failures: gateway downtime, timeouts and gateways that perform poorly for a method or bank. It cannot fix a customer's low balance or wrong PIN. Clear error messages and offering another payment method help with those.

Do I have to replace my current payment gateway?

No. Keep the gateway you already use as your primary and add a second one as backup. JustPe sits in front of both, so your checkout keeps a single integration.

How do I know if my failures are gateway-side?

Export failed payments from your gateway dashboard and look at the failure reason codes. Timeouts, gateway errors, bank downtime and a sudden drop in success rate for one method across all customers point to the gateway side. Insufficient funds, wrong PIN and invalid card details point to the customer side.
