AI payment routing uses a model trained on past transactions to predict which payment gateway is most likely to complete each new payment, using signals like payment method, bank, card BIN, amount, time of day and recent gateway performance. It helps most at high volume. With less data, simple rules plus a backup gateway usually do as well.

"AI-powered" is now on almost every payment routing product page in India. Some of it is real machine learning, some of it is a well-tuned set of rules with a new label. Neither is bad. But if you are about to pay for it, it helps to know what AI routing actually does, where it beats simple rules, and what to ask before you believe a success-rate number.

What is AI payment routing?

AI payment routing uses a model trained on past transactions to predict, for each new payment, which gateway is most likely to complete it. Instead of following fixed rules, it scores the available gateways using details like payment method, bank, card BIN, amount, time of day and each gateway's recent performance, then sends the payment to the best-scoring one.

How is it different from rule-based routing?

Rule-based routing AI / success-rate routing
How it decides Fixed rules you write Predicted success per gateway, updated from live data
Reacts to a gateway having a bad hour Only if you have a failover or threshold rule Yes, as recent success rates drop
Data needed Very little A lot, per method and bank, to predict well
Easy to explain to finance or auditors Yes Harder, unless the vendor shows why each decision was made
Best for Most businesses starting with two gateways High volume, many gateways, many banks

For a full list of rules you can set without any AI, see payment routing rules with examples.

What signals does an AI router look at?

  • Payment method and, for UPI, the flow (intent, collect or QR)
  • Card network, card type and issuing bank (from the BIN)
  • Transaction amount
  • Time of day and day of week
  • Each gateway's success rate and response time over the last few minutes
  • Error codes from recent failures
  • Cost of each gateway for that payment, if cost is part of the goal

When does AI routing actually help?

It helps when there is enough traffic for real patterns to show up, for example when one gateway does noticeably better on a particular bank's cards in the evening. With a few thousand payments a month spread across many banks, there is not enough data per combination for a model to beat a couple of sensible rules and a failover. That is not a knock on AI. It is just how prediction works.

Whatever the method, routing can only fix failures that come from the gateway side. It does not help with low balance or a wrong UPI PIN. Our guide on why online payments fail explains the difference.

7 questions to ask before you trust an AI routing claim

  1. Uplift compared to what? A single weak gateway, or a well-configured pair of gateways with failover?
  2. Over what period? A festive week and a quiet month give very different numbers.
  3. Were customer-side declines excluded? If not, the success rate mixes things routing cannot affect.
  4. Can I see it on my own traffic? Ask for a trial or a split test, not an average across all merchants.
  5. Can I override the model? You will need hard rules for international cards, mandates and saved cards.
  6. Can I see why a payment went to a gateway? This matters when support or finance asks.
  7. What happens to pending payments? A router that retries a pending payment on another gateway can charge customers twice.

Where JustPe stands

JustPe Multi PG focuses on what most growing businesses need first: one integration, a primary and backup gateway per payment method, and every gateway's callbacks in one place. If you want to compare options, our comparison of multi PG platforms in India lists the main ones, or you can talk to our team about your volumes.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI payment routing better than rule-based routing?

Not always. AI routing reacts to live performance and can find patterns across banks and amounts, but it needs a lot of transaction data to predict well. For businesses with modest volume, a few clear rules and a backup gateway often deliver most of the benefit and are easier to explain.

Can AI routing fix all failed payments?

No. Routing only helps with failures caused on the gateway side, such as downtime, timeouts or a gateway performing badly for a bank or method. It cannot fix customer-side declines such as low balance or a wrong UPI PIN.

How do I check a vendor's success-rate uplift claim?

Ask what the baseline was, over what period, whether customer-side declines were excluded, and whether you can run a split test on your own traffic. An average across all merchants tells you little about your own business.
